About Spanky’s Detailing

Hi, I’m Lee — the owner of Spanky’s Detailing.

My journey into detailing didn’t start with valeting… it started with mechanics and full vehicle restorations. I’ve always had a passion for working on cars, bringing them back to life, and taking pride in every detail.

For around 10 years, I worked in mechanics and full vehicle restorations, gaining years of hands-on experience with vehicles, paintwork and the processes involved in bringing them back to their best.

While working in the trade, I suffered a shoulder injury that meant I could no longer continue the type of work I loved. It was a difficult shift, but stepping away from cars completely was never an option.

After some time, I created Spanky’s Detailing — a way to stay in the industry, continue my passion, and still deliver high-quality work without putting strain on my injury.

Experience That Goes Beyond Cleaning

My experience with cars goes back well before Spanky’s Detailing.

When I first started polishing cars, things were very different from today. There were no dual-action machines or digital paint thickness gauges readily available. A lot of the work was done by hand or with a rotary machine, and you learned to understand paint through experience — sometimes, you learned the hard way.

Those years taught me to respect paint and understand its limitations. You couldn’t simply measure the paint, choose a machine and product, and expect the same result on every vehicle. You had to learn how different paints behaved, how much correction was safe, and when it was better to leave well enough alone.

That experience still influences the way I work today.

My background in mechanics, restoration and paintwork means I look at a vehicle as more than just something to clean. I understand the different materials, finishes and potential problems that can come with a vehicle, and I know that achieving a great finish isn’t about removing as much paint as possible — it’s about achieving the best result while preserving the vehicle’s paint wherever possible.

Modern equipment has come a long way, and I use the tools available today to achieve the best results I can.

But equipment can be bought. Experience has to be earned.
